Caring for your Poppies

Straight from our growers' notes: how to unbox these stems, how to keep them, and what they look good next to.

Yay, your Sami Sacha Poppy delivery just arrived! When you first look in your box, you will notice some stems are still in the “bud” stage; this provides protection during delivery and will increase the vase life of your blooms! Here is the run-down on poppies and how to help them develop and open beautifully!

Trim and Hydrate: Snip about an inch off of each stem, be sure to trim at an angle to encourage maximum rehydration. Place the trimmed stems in cool water right away and give them some time to drink it in.
Opening a Poppy: Once the stems are fully hydrated, we can assist them in shedding their sepal (that green bristly covering). To do so, very carefully tear the sepal beginning at the bottom of the bud, near the stem, and lift slowly towards the top. This covering can be quite thick but the petals underneath are paper-thin, so take your time! (This step can be intimidating but with a little practice you will become a pro!)
Wait and Watch: Now that the petals are free to unfurl, they will do so on their own with time, don’t force them! (If you are in a time crunch gently blow into the center of the bloom which will encourage the petals to unfold more quickly.)
If your poppies arrived bursting from the box and their covering, great! No gentle sepal peeling for you!

Poppies tend to have stems that will snap. However, with a little floral wire to reinforce or serve as a stem, you can keep using them without issue. It’s always good practice to order a little extra and babysit them if they’re for an event.
