Caring for your Alstroemeria

Straight from our growers' notes: how to unbox these stems, how to keep them, and what they look good next to.

Alstroemeria is one of the longest lasting stems we ship, and the work is all in the first ten minutes.

Unpack them, cut an inch off each stem at an angle, and strip the lower leaves hard. The leaves are the weak point on this flower: they yellow and turn to mush long before the blooms are done, and they foul the water while they do it.

Into clean, cool water with flower food. They arrive with most of the buds closed and will keep opening for the better part of a week, so do not judge the box on day one. Re-cut and change the water every two or three days.

The sap can irritate sensitive skin, so wash your hands after a long processing session.

Recommended Delivery Date: 2 days before your event / Keep flowers away from excessive heat.

Every stem carries a cluster of blooms, so a box of alstroemeria fills far more vases than the stem count suggests. Buy a couple of days ahead: the buds open progressively, and a box that looks quiet on arrival is at its best on day three.

Be ruthless with the leaves. They are the first thing to go yellow and they will date an arrangement while the flowers are still perfect.

Plays well with roses, solidago and eucalyptus.
